News! - November 15, 2006

Can you believe it, I’m actually entering news?!! Normally I’m loath to natter on in these things, but I actually have some really cool things to share. OK, here goes.
Last weekend I attended and showcased at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance conference in Monticello, New York. There were hundreds of artists wandering from showcase to showcase, all trying to get someone’s attention. Funny thing is, I had ABSOLUTLEY no agenda – really, I swear. I went last year and it was so much fun I just wanted to go back and see some friends that I don’t otherwise run into. I wanted to play some music, jam with people I like, and maybe make some new friends. 6 hours in either direction with my good friend Claudia SanSoucie only made for a more enjoyable trip.
As it turns out, I seem to have made a pretty decent impression, I had a marvelous time hanging out with my most excellent friends, and I got a really cool gig out of it. Next May I will be opening for John Smith http://www.johnsmithmusic.com. All in all a fine adventure was had by yours truly.
And the story continues…we drive back on Sunday, and in spite of getting maybe 3 hours of sleep for three nights in a row, I can’t sleep. I’m up until past midnight – but the good news is I started a new song. The bad news is I have to work on Monday. AND I have a gig Monday night (no rest for the wicked). So I drag myself through my workday, and then I have to get ready and head down to Sonar. And oh yeah, I have NO IDEA what I will be doing when I get there. This was my first time being a part of Music Monthly’s Annual Jam, and all I know is I’m singing with people I’ve never played with before. I got to make suggestions as to what songs I wanted to do, but when I get there I discover that only one of them has made the list.
Essentially what I find is a huge set list back stage, 20 or so musicians, and a lot of blank spaces for who will be doing what on which songs. Seriously, they should make a game show out of this – it’s a trip! So I started the night pretty nervously, and not sure I was going to do much of anything. However, by the end of the night I had sung lead on at least 2 songs, co-sung lead on a couple more, sung back-up on…. (hell, I have no idea how many, I’ll watch the video when I get a copy). It was sooo much fun! And the upshot is I was onstage with some of the best players out there - Tobias Hurwitz, Cary Zeigler, Dennis Chambers, Rob Fiester, Deanna Bogart, Freddie Louden, Viki Nova, Matt Hutchinson, and Kent Warren just to name a few. It was such an honor to be included. They were all really fabulous people, and they really seemed to like what I did. Dennis Chambers was especially sweet – what a nice man. This could all lead absolutely nowhere, but that doesn’t change how much fun it was. Maybe that’s really the key, just sharing your joy. Lord knows I was sharing mine – after I stopped being nervous there was just no holding back. You should have been there! I was quite a sight, I’m sure – but I’ll tell you after I see the tape….

Newsong Marathon - August 31, 2005

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've been remiss with the journal as usual. Yet another thing I always swear I'll get better at but never do. So anyway, I just spent an entire week knee-deep in songwriter's, and I was so sorry to leave. I could live like that - only I probably wouldn't live very long. I don't think I got more than 3 hours sleep on any given night. I was blissfully exhausted the entire time. Thanks so much to my BSA buds for helping to make this year's fest another rousing success for our little NPO. And thanks to the folks from Tribes Hill and SAW. Can't wait to do it again at NERFA!

Sowebo and The Bug - May 30, 2005

This is the one thing I always neglect to do. Partly because I really am that busy, and partly because it seems narcissistic (sp?) and incredible self-involved. But just maybe there really are people out there who like reading this stuff (if you exist, PLEASE tell me who you are), and just maybe it's actually good for me to write in this way. But mostly, at least today, I'm wanting to communicate, and I can't talk. Literally. Played two gigs this weekend with a wicked cold, and while I made it through those pretty well, this has all conspired to render me absolutely voiceless. I got up this morning, and...nothing. It's a good thing I don't have to attempt to sing for a few days, because it just aint gonna happen. It's a bizarre and surprisingly frustrating feeling to be silenced when basically you communicate for a living. Hence the blog entry.
The good news is we had a grand time at the SOWEBO festival, and my voice (barely) survived the 45 minute set. When you sing the way that I do, once you get going "backing off" is not really an option. You cannot express the song without using the whole of your body, you just can't. So I put everything I had into my performance, and as a consequence I now have nothing left. Well worth it in my opinion. I got quite a lot of wonderful feedback from several people I had never seen before. That's the added advantage of having a fairly unique look. Folks seem to spot the hair and think "It's THAT girl." Crank it up with what my best friend would refer to as my "slutty" clothes (she may have a point), and of course a good performance, and you get not only noticed, but remembered. Not bad for a day's work (and a few day's recovery).
BTW, if you are reading this, please visit the guestbook to let me know. And don't forget to sign the mailing list if you haven't so I can update you on where to check me out!

One Quiet Moment - April 27, 2005

The phone is not ringing, I haven't gotten one single irritating, eyes rolling, want-to-reach-through-the-screen-and-choke-you email (only a few lovely ones), the cat is sleeping, the sun is shining and I am blissfully alone. Life is good. Check back in an hour ;-).

busy, busy, busy - April 24, 2005

OK, so I know I haven’t touched this journal in what, over two months. Bad, bad singer/songwriter. But I have been a busy girl. Symbiont’s been going like gangbusters and we’ve been recording - a lot. Recording all over the damn place. In between all of that I have become President of the Baltimore Songwriter’s Association, and a performing member of Indiegrrl. Somehow among all of this, I’m actually writing quite a lot just recently. Which of course just makes me more anxious to get a cd out before I feel compelled to make it a double album. Peace, and goodnight.
