Karyn Oliver: Music

October Day

It started with such brilliance on that warm October day
Her daddy walked her ‘cross the lawn and just gave her away
In her mama’s dress she smiled and said, “I’ve never been so sure”
And this would be enough if there was never more

Nothing ever stops you know the world keeps going ‘round
Dreams die without warning but they never make a sound
So just keep on moving, go on and change your name
Because nothing ever stops, but you can, you can get away

With changes imperceptible they went from day to day
All their friends grew up grew out, and slowly moved away
The times once fine and flaming turned a little cold
She just shrugged and said, “Well that’s one way to grow old”

The silences grew longer and the babies never came
She wanted to be different but he wanted her the same
She tried so hard to warn him through the vodka in his ears
He turned the TV in the basement on, and he just disappeared

Nothing ever stops you know the world keeps going ‘round
All the dreams are dying but they never make a sound
So just keep on moving, go on and change your name
Because nothing ever stops, but you can, you can get away

On that final night she sat there just staring at the door
All the problems and the drinking she could no longer ignore
So she left him in the driveway screaming, “Don’t leave me alone”
She said, “I’m really sorry baby, but you left me….long ago”

Nothing ever stops you know the world keeps going ‘round
All your dreams are dying but they never make a sound
So just keep on moving, go on and change your name
Because nothing ever stops, but you can, you can get away
